            "abstract": "The PAN GC is a custom-built gas chromatograph with electron capture detection (Ai Qualitek, Cambridge, UK). The This instrument is regularly used on the FAAM BAe 146 research aircraft. \r\n\r\nThe outputs include: the mixing ratio of peroxy acetyl nitrate (PAN).\r\n\r\nAir samples are drawn from the main sampling manifold of the aircraft via a metal bellows pump (outlet pressure of 15 psi). Containing a dual channel separation and detection system with staggered loop injection, this instrument achieves a time resolution of 90 s and a detection limit (concentration corresponding to a signal three times the noise level of the background) of 5 pptV. The expanded uncertainty of the measurements (± 2 σ) for atmospheric mixing ratios in the low pptV to mixing ratios at the ppbV level is less than 5 % on both channels. \r\n\r\nWithin the instrument, air is drawn into one of two thermostated and pressure-monitored 2 ml sample loops by a small diaphragm pump housed within the GC. Each analysis channel is equipped with a fused silica capillary column system comprising a 10 m pre-column and a 30 m analytical column (both columns have a 0.53 mm i.d. SPB-5, 1.5 micron film thickness). An electrically-actuated 10-port valve provides a back-flush facility from the pre-column, ensuring that more retained compounds do not enter the analytical column and interfere with subsequent analyses. After 90 s flushing, the analytes in the sample loop are swept onto each column in a flow of argon carrier gas. Both the column system and sample loops are thermostated in a Peltier cooled oven at 25 ºC. The instrument is equipped with two ECDs mounted in a thermostated enclosure at 50 ºC. Argon gas is also used as the ECD make-up gas. Moisture is added to the Argon gas line via a hydrated copper sulphate trap which helps to improve the baseline stability. \r\n\r\n",

            "abstract": "The NERC MST (Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere) Radar is a 46.5 MHz pulsed Doppler radar located at Capel Dewi, near Aberystwyth in west Wales. It is the UK's most powerful and versatile wind-profiling instrument. It is operated predominantly in the ST mode, covering the altitude range 2 - 20 km, for which MST radars are unique in their ability to give continuous measurements of the three-dimensional wind vector at high resolution - typically 300 m in altitude and 2 - 3 minutes in time. Moreover, under certain circumstances, it can provide information about atmospheric stability, turbulence and precipitation. It is therefore ideally suited for studying everything from large scale weather systems down to small-scale atmospheric phenomena.\r\n\r\nThe radar began operations in 1990 and has been operated on a quasi-continuous basis since 1997.",

            "abstract": "The Facility has been operating a Vaisala LD40 laser ceilometer at the MST radar site near Aberystwyth since 8th August 2005.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe LD40 transmits 75 ns duration pulses at a repetition frequency of 6494 Hz. The temperature of the laser diode is maintained within a narrow range in order to ensure high stability of the emitted wavelength. This allows a very narrow band optical filter to be used at the input to the receiver. The receiver signal amplitude is sampled at time intervals of 50 ns, corresponding to altitude intervals of 7.5 m. Owing to the low power of the transmitter, the receiver signal amplitude for a single pulse backscattered from a high-altitude cloud is not sufficiently large to be distinguished above the noise level. Nevertheless the contribution from cloud backscatter remains coherent from pulse to pulse, whereas that from noise varies randomly. Consequently the detectability of the desired signal can be greatly improved by summing the receiver signal amplitude (separately for each altitude interval) over all pulses within a 15 s interval. Attention is restricted to altitudes below 13.05 km (corresponding to maximum range of detection of 13.00 km - the instrument is at 50 m above mean sea level) since, even after summation, the presence of any clouds which might exist at higher altitudes can only be determined with difficulty.\r\n\r\nThe instrument manufacturer's cloud detection algorithm is applied to the 15 s receiver signal amplitude profiles. It is designed to detect up to three possible cloud layers. For each of these, the altitude (above mean sea level) of the cloud base and the depth to which the laser light penetrates is determined. If the laser light is not able to penetrate the entire depth of a particular cloud layer, missing datum values are given for subsequent layers. If no cloud layer is detected, missing datum values are given for all three layers. In order to distinguish between cloud-free conditions and a lack of observations, attention should be paid to instrument status flag. An estimate is also given of the maximum possible altitude of cloud detection and of the visibility for a human observer looking upwards. The maximum range of cloud detection defaults to 13.05 km under clear sky conditions. A lower value implies that no information may be given on any cloud layers which may exist beyond this altitude. Under such conditions there is also a limit to the visibility for a human observer. Otherwise a missing datum value is given. Finally, an estimate is given of the precipitation rate based on the characteristics of the backscatter profile. A value of 0 implies no precipitation and a value of 3 suggests heavy precipitation.",

            "abstract": "In the \"GPS Water Vapour Project\" radio signals from the Global Positioning System (a satellite navigation and positioning system) are processed to derive estimates of the total column Integrated Water Vapour (IWV) content of the atmosphere.\r\n\r\nThe Met Office is involved in a number of collaborative projects to assess the potential of new observational networks under the COST framework (European Co-operation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research). Since the movement of water vapour can transport latent heat and moisture considerable distances, and since water vapour is an important greenhouse gas, knowledge of its distribution throughout the atmosphere is of considerable interest for both numerical weather prediction and climate applications. A new technique to measure the integrated water vapour (IWV) relies on the delay of radio signals received from Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. The IWV represents the total water vapour content of atmosphere along the path between the GPS satellite and the receiver; most of this is contained within the lowest few kilometres of the atmosphere. The primary objective of COST-716 is to assess the operational potential for a ground-based GPS system to provide near-real-time observations of IWV.             "abstract": "The Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer is based on the principal of the mobility of a charged particle in an electric field. Particles entering the system are neutralized (using a radioactive source) such that they have a Fuchs equilibrium charge distribution. The source is Kr-85, a beta emitter. Two sources are available, one with an activity of 74MBeq and the other 370MBeq. The University of Manchester has a mobile license and can operate it around the country. However, all users who require use of the SMPS must have their own site licence to house this source and have spare capacity on the licence. If this source is to be used away from the host institute, then users must have a mobile licence, with capacity for the source. Before any loan of the AMF SMPS is agreed, the users must supply proof of the licence and the spare capacity to the IS and a copy of the local rules for handling and storage of Radioactive substances for approval by University of Manchester local Radiological Protection Officer. The particles then enter a Differential Mobility Analyser (DMA) where the aerosol is classified according to electrical mobility, with only particles of a narrow range of mobility exiting through the output slit. This monodisperse distribution then goes to a Condensation Particle Counter which determines the particle concentration at that size.\r\n\r\nThe 3936 SMPS is widely used as the standard for measuring airborne particle size distributions. This system is also routinely used to make accurate nanoparticle size measurements of particles suspended in liquids. The National Institute of Standards and Ttechnology (NIST) uses a TSI DMA to size 60nm and 100 nm standard size reference materials. SMPS spectrometer sizing is a discreet technique in which number concentrations are measured directly without assuming the shape of the particle size distribution. The method is independent of the refractive index of the particle or fluid, and has a high degree of absolute sizing accuracy and measurement repeatability.\r\n",

It can also self-calibrate with its two internal reference blackbodies. The instrument was designed to be mounted on ships.
