Led by Dr. Meredith Willams, Geomatics and Water Resources Research Group (GWRRG), School of Civil Engineering & Geosciences, Newcastle University, Cassie Building, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7RU. Location: SE Iceland\r\n\r\nCost and time-effective reflectance correction is an important issue for multispectral and hyperspectral imagery from both airborne and spaceborne platforms. In high latitude glaciated environments data acquisition conditions often fall outside the range of illumination levels and solar elevations considered acceptable for mid latitude deployments. System performance can also be compromised by the wide range of target brightness levels encountered around glacial margins. This project hasl directly compared the performance and appropriateness of a range of simple VIS-SWIR reflectance correction procedures for airborne sensors such as CASI-2, ATM, Eagle and Hawk under varying conditions, utilising a small test site that falls within the well established and resourced EarthWatch Institute long-term monitoring project site in Skaftafell, SE Iceland. \r\n\r\nThe approaches that have been adopted have included radiative transfer modelling from FSF sunphotometer derived parameters and a variety of empirical line based methodologies using a range of ground calibration targets. The results have been directly compared with those achieved with ARSF imagery acquired during the 2006 NCAVEO Chilbolton experiment and the HY05/03 ARSF deployment. The final results have been used to provide recommendations on the optimal choice of reflectance correction methodologies for future airborne remote sensing campaigns in high latitude glaciated environments.", "keywords": "", "status": "completed", "publicationState": "published", "identifier_set": [ "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/identifiers/6993/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/identifiers/6994/?format=api" ], "observationCollection": [ "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/observationcollections/8604/?format=api" ], "parentProject": null, "subProject": [], "responsiblepartyinfo_set": [ "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/38388/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/144607/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/145062/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/145063/?format=api" ] }, { "ob_id": 10571, "uuid": "2fc723178299bdbc6cc38454d041ce77", "title": "ARSF - Flight 00/04: Shell Haven area", "abstract": "ARSF Project 00/04. Led by: Dr. Doreen Sandra Boyd, School of Geography, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK. Location: Brooms Farm, UK.\r\n\r\nSatellite remote sensing provides the opportunity to measure and monitor key photosynthetic pigments such as chlorophyll content of vegetation canopies, which are a key and dynamic component of global ecosystems. The widely accepted red-edge algorithm, used to estimate chlorophyll content from remotely sensed data, is not suitable for use with satellite imagery. To overcome this problem, the new Envisat MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll index (MCTI) has been developed. It is the only satellite chlorophyll index available for use and is available to users as a Level 2 product from the European Space Agency. However, there is a need to validate the MCTI. In 2006 the NERC ARSF supported a validation campaign over croplands and woodlands in southern England and further support has been received from the NERC FSF and the ESA. Led by: Shelly Hinsley. Location: Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, UK. In lowland Britain, deforestation was extensive as long ago as the 14th century. Many woodland bird species have adapted to use secondary habitats such as tree and hedgerow networks in farmland and woody vegetation in urban parks and gardens. Various studies have documented reduced breeding success in birds living in such secondary habitats, but the costs to adults, in terms of time and energy, have been little studied. Adult birds attempting to feed young in habitats where food supplies are patchily distributed will waste time and energy moving between patches and suffer increased exposure to adverse weather. We were measuring energy expenditure in free-living tits breeding in a number of secondary habitats. We proposed to use LIDAR, ATM and CASI data to quantify habitat structure and composition to investigate how these features influence adult energy expenditure and overall reproductive success. Such remote-sensed data will be particularly valuable for these spatially complex habitats in which good foraging habitat is mixed with poor (e.g. exotic tree species) and nil (e.g. mown grass, open water) quality land uses. However, much less is known about the Quaternary-Tertiary geological history of the Blue Nile and its headwaters than for Lake Victoria, the source of the White Nile. A recent NERC-funded research programme on Lake Tana provided new core data (Lamb et al., 2007) that showed Tana dried out at about 17,000 cal BP, contemporaneous with desiccation of Lake Victoria. The seismic data revealed a previously unknown, thick (+100 m) sedimentary sequence with basin-wide reflecting horizons strongly suggesting numerous earlier regional, and possibly global (Heinrich?), climatic events. This was an unexpected discovery and, in order to best interpret this record, a much more comprehensive knowledge of the surrounding geology and regional tectonics was required. It is generally acknowledged that the magnitude of the changes in microclimate is related to the size, shape and 3-D geometry of the gap and characteristics of the remaining surrounding canopy. However, there is currently a paucity of models that are able to describe these relationships, particularly in temperate forests. Furthermore, we currently have very limited ability to characterise the consequences of the variations in the spatial distribution of gaps on the microclimatic conditions across entire forest stands. The proposed project aimed to address these issues by using a unique combination of field observations, numerical modelling and remote sensing techniques. In situ observations at the field site helped to provide the empirical evidence with which to construct a dynamic spatio-temporal model of gap microclimates, while experiments over the next growing season developed robust and extendible remote sensing techniques for characterising relevant gap and canopy properties. Surface relief and flow-wise gradients was-- quantified from these data to compare with similar measurements from geophysical data collected within the lake in 1997 and previously. On entering water, lava becomes effectively less dense because of buoyancy and cools more rapidly because of water's greater heat capacity than air. Volcanic islands, where water-entering flows have been located previously, are typically strongly eroded by sea-swell around coasts so they usually provide poor information on morphological effects of buoyancy and cooling in shallow regions, but lavas emplaced into lakes are less affected. This target Thingvallavatn lava indeed shows evidence for an abrupt steepening 0-20 m below water level that could be caused by inflation of the lava as it lost effective density immediately on entering water. Combined with further fieldwork and analysis of sample physical properties, this project therefore sought to address the behaviour of lava in a site only 30 km from Reykjavik.", "keywords": "", "status": "completed", "publicationState": "published", "identifier_set": [ "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/identifiers/7073/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/identifiers/7074/?format=api" ], "observationCollection": [ "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/observationcollections/8604/?format=api" ], "parentProject": null, "subProject": [], "responsiblepartyinfo_set": [ "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/38624/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/144620/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/145197/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/145198/?format=api" ] }, { "ob_id": 10675, "uuid": "37d84454cc1d9e10e53a7b85321387ff", "title": "ARSF - Flight 96/20: Cwm Berwyn area", "abstract": "ARSF project 96/20: Inversion of a canopy reflectance model for the estimation of forest leaf area index. Location: River Frome, Somerset, UK.\r\n\r\nSubmerged macrophytes can prove difficult to monitor using digital imaging. Water Crowfoot Ranunculus pseudofluitans is a keystone macrophyte in chalk streams, forming a fundamental structural component, supporting high invertebrate densities, thereby enhancing productivity to the benefit of fish populations. R. pseudofluitans grow in relatively shallow, clear water, with most biomass on or near the water surface, increasing the chances of detection using remote sensing. Several abiotic and biotic factors (e.g. shading by bankside vegetation and grazing by mute swans Cygnus olor) control R. pseudofluitans distribution. Understanding the importance of R. pseudofluitans as a major factor influencing aquatic biodiversity and as preferred habitat for fish has been pivotal in the conservation of salmonids. This project used remote sensing, existing long term datasets and new field work to map the distribution and abundance of R. pseudofluitans in a chalk stream, assess the impact of swan grazing and predict the distribution of R. pseudofluitans as salmonid habitat in order to advise river management. Because of the long history of archaeological study around Hayton, it provided ideal ground for methodological testing. Close comparison between extant survey and excavation data, geophysical survey, detailed soil maps, and historical aerial photography permitted detailed analysis of the success of lidar survey in identifying buried and surface archaeology. The lidar data provided micromorphological detail that assisted in the interpretation of field survey results by providing explanations for archaeological visibility based on patterns of landscape degradation. The main asphalt runway which runs in a N-S orientation has been shown through previous studies to have a uniform reflectance. Other surfaces at this site have also been identified as suitable targets for use in remote sensing calibration experiments, most notably the concrete area at the southern end of the main asphalt runway, a darker bitumen covered area at the northern end and an Astroturf covered tennis court to the north-west of the main runway. Spectral ground data collected during 2002 using a dual-beam GER1500 spectroradiometer system have confirmed that the reflectance of these targets is very stable over short time-scales. Led by: Dr. Tim Wright, School of Earth and Environment, University of Leeds, Leeds, UK. Location: Afar Province, Ethiopia.\r\n\r\nThe Afar region in Northern Ethiopia sits on a tectonic triple junction above a hot spot in the Earth mantle, where the Arabian, Nubian (African) and Somalian plates pull apart. The plate boundary zones are segmented into ~60-km-long rift segments, similar to those seen at mid-ocean ridges. Such structures are usually inaccessible to remote sensing techniques as they are covered by 2.5 km of water. In September 2005, the Dabbahu rift segment, on the Arabia-Nubia boundary, underwent a major rifting episode – 2.5 km3 of magma was injected into a volcanic dyke along the entire segment, which pushed the plates apart by up to 8 metres. The Hararo rift segment lies immediately to the south of the Dabbahu segment and is geologically and structurally very similar. We proposed a survey that characterised the style of previous volcanic and tectonic events on the Hararo segment, which has no historic record of activity. These data was compared to similar data sets from the Dabbahu segment (January 2008) and Krafla (Summer 2007) in Iceland. Whilst these three components have been studied separately in detail, quantification of their interactions had so far not been attempted. This research gap is important due to the requirement for accurate prediction of 1) Climate change effects on proglacial systems, 2) Volcanic / geothermal effects on proglacial systems, and 3) the effect of each of the above on river biodiversity. Led by Dr. Adrian Luckman, Department of Geography, Swansea University, Swansea, SA2 8PP.\r\n\r\nThe process of calving at glaciers terminating in water accounts for a significant part of the flux of ice from the cryosphere to the oceans, and appears to be increasing as a result of climate change. There was an urgent need to better understand the mechanisms behind ice fracture, crevasse opening and calving events, so that the effects of climate change on the cryosphere can be better predicted. Breikull makes an excellent case study for such theoretical development and provides a community test site for a range of ice-dynamic and geomorphological investigations. This project directly addressed these topics by acquiring and analysing an unprecedented dataset for dynamic and volumetric analysis. In choosing Breikull, a lake-calving glacier, a large body of associated data becomes available including a bed DEM and historical topographic data. The ARSF AOI offered a unique chance to gain repeat lidar and aerial photograph datasets which are unlikely to become available by other means. The research team brought together a wide range of scientists to develop this community test site, and include experts in data processing and geophysics (Swansea), topographic change and geomorphology (Evans and Twigg), calving processes (Benn and Mottram) and glacier modelling (Aðalgeirsdóttir and Bjornsson).", "keywords": "", "status": "completed", "publicationState": "published", "identifier_set": [ "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/identifiers/7112/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/identifiers/7113/?format=api" ], "observationCollection": [ "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/observationcollections/8604/?format=api" ], "parentProject": null, "subProject": [], "responsiblepartyinfo_set": [ "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/38741/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/144628/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/145239/?format=api", "https://api.catalogue.ceda.ac.uk/api/v2/rpis/145240/?format=api" ] }, { "ob_id": 10727, "uuid": "722f74456f28957a3fb7ee231901c081", "title": "ARSF - Flight IPY07/08: Iceland, Langjokull area", "abstract": "ARSF project IPY07/08: Mass Balance Modelling of Langjokull Glacier, Iceland; led by Dr. Ian Willis, Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, Lensfield Rd, Cambridge CB2 1ER\r\n--------\r\n Langjs second largest icecap, is losing mass over twice as fast as the larger Vatnajkull. The main aim of this proposal was to use 10m LiDAR and ATM data to develop a physical mass balance model to predict Langjs response to climate change and its contribution to sea level. The DEM provided the topographic control on the model. The ATM reflectance data would be used, with satellite and in situ measurements, to parameterise spatiotemporal albedo variations. The model would be driven by GCM output, ERA-40 reanalysis, surface weather records and statistical downscaling, and would be tested against point mass balance measurements collected since 1996. It would also be compared with volume changes derived by comparing the LiDAR DEM with earlier, coarser photogrammetric DEMs for the entire ice cap and for one of its outlet glaciers. Our second aim was to investigate the effects of DEM resolution on net shortwave radiation receipt and melting, using 2m LiDAR data collected over two outlet glaciers. Led by: Dr Timothy Wright, University of Leeds. Location: Afar, Ethiopia.\r\n \r\nThe paradigm of plate tectonics is widely accepted, and there is a reasonable consensus as to how it operates. However, we have little understanding of the processes and controls involved in the break-up of continents and the generation of new oceanic crust. A recent rifting episode and eruption in the Afar region of northern Ethiopia offered a unique and timely opportunity to study the transition from continental break-up to seafloor spreading in an active setting, to document and to model the magmatic and tectonic processes within the crust and the uppermost mantle, and to determine how the crust grows at divergent plate boundaries. There was an urgent need for further geophysical, geochemical and geological observations in Afar to complement and capitalise on the recent UK geodetic and seismic monitoring of the Earth's response to this major rifting episode. We brought together a consortium with the expertise to tackle an extensive, multidisciplinary study of how plate rupture and crustal growth is achieved through the processes of lithospheric thinning and magma intrusion. We tracked the creation, migration, evolution and emplacement of magma from the asthenosphere to the crust, determine the dynamics of rifting and understand the processes that result in along-axis rift segmentation. EUCAARI is an EU 6th Framework Integrated Programme on Aerosol Cloud Climate and Air Quality Interactions. A major activity in EUCAARI is a multi-aircraft experiment to investigate aerosol properties and processes across Europe and to study the interaction between aerosols and clouds. This latter activity was conducted by the French SAFIRE ATR-42 aircraft, which flew in the region of Cabauw, Netherlands, a major ground station equipped with radiometers and lidar. The current activities were focussed on aerosol-cloud interactions making use of in-situ measurements but including a cloud RADAR and an aerosol lidar. Remote sensing has been used for mapping the spatial and temporal dynamics of vegetation FMC, but virtually all of this work has focused on Mediterranean ecosystems. In England and Wales fire risk is assessed using the Meteorological Office Fire Severity Index which uses meteorological data to determine fuel moisture and soil water balance and map fire risk in 10x10km cells on a daily basis. The model does not currently account for spatial variations in fuel type and has to be tuned locally to account for variations in vegetation cover. Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) is a more sustainable form of forest management that avoids the need for clear cutting and allows the utilisation of natural regeneration rather than re-planting to re-stock forest stands. This type of forest management greatly increases inventory and monitoring requirements both in terms of the amount of information required and the frequency with which inventories must be repeated. High spatial resolution remote sensing has the capability to meet some of these requirements by providing information on forest structure at a within-stand level and may therefore allow a more adaptive management approach to be taken. Specifically, remotely sensed data may allow indices to be derived to describe both vertical and horizontal heterogeneity of forest structure and the prediction of understorey light conditions, an important factor in the success of natural regeneration.
