ERS 1 was taken out of action in 2000 after nine years of service.\n\n<div property=\"cedacat:introduction\">\n<div class=\"introduction\">Introduction</div>\n<p>European Remote Sensing satellite, ERS-1, launched in 1991, was ESA's first Earth Observation satellite (polar orbiting); it carried a comprehensive payload including an imaging Active Microwave Instrument-Synthetic Aperture Radar (AMI-SAR), a radar altimeter and other powerful instruments to measure ocean surface temperature and winds at sea. ERS-2, which overlapped with ERS-1, was launched in 1995 with an additional sensor for atmospheric ozone research. The XT4 has 8 gigabytes of memory per node while the XT5 has 16 gigabytes per node, giving the users a total of 362 terabytes of high-speed memory in the combined system. The two systems are connected to the Scalable I/O Network (SION), which links them together and to the Spider file system. The XT5 system has 256 service and I/O nodes providing up to 240 gigabytes per second of bandwidth to SION and 200 gigabits per second to external networks. The XT4 has 116 service and I/O nodes providing 44 gigabytes per second of bandwidth to SION and 100 gigabits per second to external networks."

Infoterra Ltd, backed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the British National Space Centre (BNSC), has set up a Level 3 product generation and dissemination service. \n\nThe production service is based around the High level Product Generation (HiProGen) system which was initially developed under an ESA funded Research and Technology Development contract.  Upgraded to use Near Real-Time data and to work in the UK-PAC operational environment, the HiProGen system is now generating Level 3 composites of MERIS Level 2 geophysical data.  Level 3 products are generated in GeoTIFF format, on lat-long geocoded grids, accompanied by an XML metadata file and a JPEG browse image.\n\nThe Infoterra Level 3 production service combines individual passes (or swathes) of data from satellite instruments into single composite products.  These Level 3 composites generated at global and regional scales using two distinct types of compositing algorithm.   At the global scale, large (nominally 4.6km) sample sizes are used with each input Level 2 pixel accumulated into a geographic 'bin'.  This is the standard form of compositing carried out where the output bin is much larger than the size of the input instrument samples.  Unfortunately at higher scales, where the input and output sample sizes are comparable, the input samples overlap several cells of the output grid to a significant degree.  If this is not taken into account then both the fine scale values and the overall product statistics are distorted (i.e. the final product is not flux conserving). \n\nFor the regional products, with nominal sample spacings of 1km or less, an area weighted, flux conserving compositing algorithm is used.  This algorithm was developed by Tom McGlynn of NASA. \n\nThe HiProGen Level 3 Production system makes use of the Basic ENVISAT (A)ATSR and MERIS (BEAM) toolkit. Mathematically, different input data values are combined using a Maximum Likelihood, Arithmetic Mean or Min-Max algorithm.  The Infoterra service uses the arithmetic mean algorithm for all Level 3 product generation."

                    "abstract": "This product is the Land Surface Temperature (LST) Level 2 data product (UOL_LST_2P) from the Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR).\r\n\r\nThe Level 2 LST product provides 1km resolution AATSR-based land surface temperature and its associated uncertainties, as well as auxiliarly information. It has been produced by the University of Leicester under funding from ESA and the NCEO. The data is included as part of the official ESA (A)ATSR multimission product from the 3rd version of that dataset.\r\n\r\nThe algorithm applied for computing LST is based on the methodology originally developed by Prata (2002) in that it uses a split-window approach with model-derived regression coefficients which implicitly include the effects of emissivity. However, the updated methodology that was used here applies significantly improved auxiliary datasets for land cover, green vegetation fraction, and total column water vapour and as such is able to reduce or eliminate a wide variety of issues that were observed with the original LST product. Further details about the algorithm used for producing this dataset can be found in Ghent (in preparation)."

Metop-A, launched on 19 October 2006, represents the first in a series of three satellites forming the space segment of the EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS). Metop-A is Europe's first polar-orbiting meteorological satellite\n\n<div property=\"cedacat:introduction\">\n<div class=\"introduction\">Introduction</div>\n<p>EPS Metop is a series of polar orbiting meteorological satellites operated by Eumetsat. The satellites are all part of the Eumetsat Polar System. CALIPSO is a Franco-American satellite launched in 2006, with a specific purpose of advanced measurement of cloud and aerosols. The satellite is a part of the Afternoon Constellation (A-Train) under NASA-centred Earth Observation System (EOS). A-Train is a group of polar orbiting satellites following closely with each other for synergetic measurements. They pass through the  the equator around 13:00 and 01:00. CALIPSO is the first satellite that is able to provide data of vertical profiles of aerosol. These data is used for studying direct and indirect aerosol forcings. Vertical cloud profile is also required to predict precipitation and the strength of the circulation. The satellite contains Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP), Wide Field Camera (WFC) and Imaging Infrared Radiometer (IIR).\r\n\r\nCALIPSO is a satellite launched in 2006, with a specific purpose of advanced measurement of cloud and aerosols.
