            "value": " <p>Glacier response to a changing climate in southern Iceland. Led by Dr. David Graham, Department of Geography, Loughborough University, Loughborough, Leicestershire LE11 3TU. </p> <p>Three inter-related themes will provide new baseline datasets for the rigorous evaluation of the timing and mechanisms of glacial response to climatic forcing at a range of contemporary ice masses. Global warming is predicted to have a pronounced effect on terrestrial ice masses but predictions of how ice masses will respond to future warming depend on rigorous understanding of the relationship between climatic change and recent glacier activity. The mass balance of glaciers in southern Iceland is closely coupled to North Atlantic Ocean circulation and these glaciers are therefore highly sensitive barometers of regional climatic change. Consequently, proglacial landforms in southern Iceland are archives of North Atlantic climate change and provide an important resource for the evaluation of both the timing and mechanisms of ice mass response to recent climatic forcing. Proglacial areas in southern Iceland have been subject to regular aerial survey since the 1940s providing important insights into both the timing and mechanisms of glacial retreat. However, since the Icelandic mapping agency ceased routine aerial photography, this fundamental avenue of research has been curtailed.  <br /> </p>",

            "value": " <br />\nData from the NERC airborne CASI and ATM instruments are requested in support of ongoing research into measurement and modelling of forest growth dynamics and terrestrial sequestration of carbon using remote sensing (RS) data. This research is being carried out at UCL and Edinburgh under the aegis of the NERC Earth Observation Centre of Excellence in Terrestrial Carbon Dynamics. The aim of the research is to monitor forest structural and biochemical parameters related to canopy productivity and to relate these quantities to the net (daily and annual) fluxes of energy and carbon in forested regions. Structural parameters of interest include canopy height, leaf area index (LAI), standing biomass and canopy clumping; biochemical  parameters include leaf pigment concentration, photosynthetic activity and light use efficiency (LUE) (Nichol et al., 2000, 2002). \n\nIt is intended that structural and biochemical information regarding the state of the forest canopy would be extracted from multiangular/multispectral (ATM) and hyperspectral (CASI)  reflectance data over the CARBOEUROPE site at Harwood Forest obtained (ideally) at two dates, towards the start and end of the UK growing season (e.g. early May and late August). The site is well-established as a field site, having been used in a number of (ongoing) experiments aimed at quantifying forest carbon fluxes (Valentini et al., 2000). Ground measurements of structural and biochemical parameters would be made contemporaneously with the airborne data acquisition, to allow validation of derived information. Equipment would be required from the NERC Equipment Pool for Field Spectroscopy (EPFS), including a radiometer for measuring canopy and soil spectra and a sun photometer for characterising atmospheric scattering. In order to estimate CO2 fluxes eddy covariance measurements would be made, in addition to measurements of leaf biochemistry (pigment concentrations). Finally, if LiDAR data over the site were acquired, significant additional structural information could be derived, such as canopy height, crown density and the vertical distribution of scattering objects within the canopy (depending on instrument type).",

In situ measurements of CO2 flux will be used to quantify net (daily and annual) fluxes of energy and carbon, which will in turn be compared to EO measures known to be related to vegetation productivity such as light-use-efficiency (LUE) and photochemical reflectance index (PRI). Canopy structural parameters will be extracted from airborne data using canopy scattering models driven by estimates of 3D canopy architecture. This work will augment existing development of 3D forest modelling and reflectance simulation methods. Biochemical parameters of interest include leaf pigment concentration, photosynthetic activity, LUE and PRI; structural parameters include canopy height, leaf area index (LAI), standing biomass and canopy clumping. To obtain both biochemical and structural parameters, multispectral multiangular reflectance data are required. EO data will also be combined with ecosystem models in an assimilation scheme aimed at describing canopy productivity and hence carbon sequestration. The results of this project will contribute to understanding how terrestrial carbon fluxes can be related to EO data and, in particular, how uncertainties in the calculation of such fluxes can be reduced.",

            "value": " <br />\nThe overall aim of this project is to develop hyperspectral and LiDAR techniques that will enable rapid and detailed characterisation of the surface structure of blanket peatland, from micro to macro scales. Blanket peatlands are complex landscape units that show distinct heterogeneity in surface elevation and vegetation/land cover at scales ranging from 1 to > 1000 m. Peatland hydrological and biogeochemical processes are both intimately related to heterogeneity in surface structure at the micro scale (1-100 m). The development of remote sensing techniques for quantifying surface attributes at the micro scale is the first, crucial step that will enable routine monitoring of peatland response to environmental change and the accurate estimation of peatland contributions to regional and global CH4 emissions.  \nMultidate hyperspectral AISA sensor data are requested in support of two PhD studentships addressing separate but complementary issues of the spectral classification of microform abundance within discrete microtopes on blanket mires, and the scaling effects of methane emission 'hot spots' on reflectance. Two contrasting study sites are proposed (southwestern and far northeastern Scotland) allowing the generality of the results to be tested. Overflights will be supported by a detailed ground survey aimed at establishing spectral libraries of reflectance from peatland microforms and at the accurate geometric and atmospheric correction of the datasets. Analysis will be directed towards unmixing approaches for the accurate classification of microtope boundaries, and the scale dependencies in the peatland systems with a view to the best non-linear methods of scaling from high to coarser scale resolution.",
