The team brings together European expertise in creating climate quality records of ocean temperatures from satellite data, with expertise in climate applications and computer engineering. \r\nThrough the ESA funded Climate Change Initiative, the team have created a new, 20-yr climate record of global sea surface temperature (SST). Based on satellite data, this record is independent of thermometer based measurements from ships and buoys. The new climate SST record complements and challenges existing knowledge of how ocean temperatures have evolved.
\r\n
\r\nThe main dataset consists of stable, low-bias sea surface temperature (SST) data covering the period 08/1991 - 04/2012 (referred to as the Long Term Product).\r\n

\r\nThe version 1.1 data is an update to the version 1.0 dataset with the following changes:\r\n

\r\n
Complete up to end of AATSR mission (April 2012)\r\n

Fixes persistent holes from missing data after midnight\r\n

Restores missing files\r\n

Various metadata bugs fixed\r\n

",

Many of the projects and NERC Thematic Programmes that come under the UWERN umbrella involve UFAM instruments.\r\n\r\n\r\n

The key data types created by UFAM projects are instrumental datasets. \r\nUFAM is a pool of \r\ninstruments and facilities in the UK designed to make measurements of \r\nsmall and mesoscale features in the atmosphere, generating data for a range \r\nof different research projects. The BADC communicates primarily with the \r\nindividual instrument scientists \r\nemployed by UFAM to maintain and manage each instrument. \r\n\r\n

\r\n
UFAM Related Datasets at the BADC
\r\n\r\n
The BADC currently holds data from the following projects and campaigns that have made use of UFAM instruments:\r\n

\r\n
Convective Storm Initiation Project (CSIP).\r\n

Improved Air Quality Forecasting (Invest to Save Budget ISB52).\r\n

The North Atlantic Marine Bounday Layer EXperiment (NAMBLEX).\r\n

The Tropospheric ORganic CHemistry experiment (TORCH) - part of the Polluted Troposphere thematic program.\r\n

The UFAM intercomparison experiment.\r\n

The Cloud & Water Vapour Experiment.\r\n

The Shoeburyness Field Trial.\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\nData from UFAM instruments is stored at the BADC in two ways:\r\n

Where UFAM instruments have been used during intensive measurement campaigns the data is \r\nstored together with the rest of the data in the archive for that campaign, \r\nfor example, data measured during NAMBLEX is kept \r\nin the NAMBLEX archive, data from \r\nthe TORCH campaign can be found in the \r\n\r\nPolluted Troposphere archive, and data measured during CWAVE can be found in the \r\n\r\nCWAVE archive.\r\n

UFAM instruments also collect data outside of these campaigns- either during \r\nsmaller projects for example the intercomparison experiment \r\nand the Shoeburyness field trial, or as background measurements in between assignments. This data\r\nis kept in the \r\nUFAM archive.\r\n

\r\nThese archives are, by their nature, inter-linked and the data will be archived in such a \r\nway that it is browsable via either the instrument or via a particular project title. \r\nThis will establish a long-term data archive of data using consistent formats that will be a \r\nvaluable asset to future researchers. \r\nAccess to each archive must be applied for separately.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Data Management
\r\n\r\n
The BADC has produced a Data Management Plan for UFAM. These documents cover all the data-related issues relating to UFAM research and are a useful guide for data providers and instrument scientists. The Annex of the Data Management Plan holds the UFAM Data Protocol.\r\n

\r\n

\r\n\r\n
File-naming, metadata and data formats
\r\n\r\n
The BADC is encouraging all UFAM projects and campaigns to deliver data in either NetCDF (binary) or NASA Ames (ASCII) format. NetCDF data should conform to the Climate and Forecasts (CF) Metadata Convention. Information on the inclusion of metadata is also provided.\r\n\r\n

If you are a data provider please see the submission instructions. Advice on standardising filenames is provided on the file-naming convention page along with a list of common names used for instruments, locations etc. in filenames.

\r\n\r\n

Many data files contain the variable time which can be expressed in \r\nseveral ways. Guidelines on the \r\nrecommended format of the time-variable header lines, units and the data values in \r\nNasa-Ames files are available and are based on the format used in NetCDF.\r\n\r\n

\r\n
\r\nCitation\r\n
\r\n
Universities Weather Research Network (UWERN), Blyth, A.; Hopkins, J.; Collier, C.; Gallagher, M.; Heard, D.; Illingworth, A.; Jones, R.; Lewis, A.; Robins, A.; Vaughan, G.; Price, J.; Bandy, B.; Bozier, K.; Brooks, B.; Flynn, M.; Garcelon, S.; Hayden, P.; Ingham, T.; Nicol, J.; Norton, E.; Whalley, L.; Williams, P. OC-EC data were taken using a Sunset OC-EC analyser owned by the University of Birmingham. \nOC-EC analyses were performed on 1.5 cm2 filter portions following the EUSAAR2 thermal protocol and each sample was measured at least twice\nReference on OC-EC measurements and the EUSAAR2 protocol can be found in Cavalli et al., Atmos. Meas. Tech., 3 (79 to 89) 2010\nThe uncertainties for OC, EC and TC were 13.5%, 10.2% and 11.7% respectively. The uncertainties were estimated by using the sum of the squares of the variability of the filter samples measured in replicate within the same day\nNo blank correction has been applied as the measured blanks were found always below the limit of detection (LoD of TC was 0.2 ug/cm2),TC was found to be at least 10 times above the LoD in all samples",
