"abstract": "The CRU CY version 3.23 dataset consists of country averages at a monthly, seasonal and annual frequency, for ten climate variables, including cloud cover, diurnal temperature range, frost day frequency, precipitation, daily mean temperature, monthly average daily maximum and minimum temperature, vapour pressure and Potential Evapo-transpiration. \r\n\r\nThis dataset was produced in 2015 by the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia. The data are available as text files with the extension '.per' and can be opened by most text editors.\r\n\r\nSpatial averages are calculated using area-weighted means. CRU CY3.23 is derived directly from the CRU TS3.23 dataset. CRU CY version 3.23 spans the period 1901-2014 for 289 countries.\r\n\r\nTo understand the CRU-CY3.23 dataset, it is important to understand the construction and limitations of the underlying dataset, CRU TS3.23. It is therefore recommended that all users read the paper referenced below (Harris et al, 2014).\r\n\r\nCRU CY data are available for download to all CEDA users."

"abstract": "The gridded CRU TS (time-series) 3.23 data are month-by-month variations in climate over the period 1901-2014, on high-resolution (0.5x0.5 degree) grids, produced by the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia.\r\n\r\nCRU TS 3.23 variables are cloud cover, diurnal temperature range, frost day frequency, PET, precipitation, daily mean temperature, monthly average daily maximum and minimum temperature, and vapour pressure for the period Jan. 1901 - Dec. 2014.\r\n\r\nCRU TS 3.23 data were produced using the same methodology as for the 3.21 datasets. In addition to updating the dataset with 2014 data, some new stations have been added for TMP and PRE only. Known issues predating this release remain; the 4.00 release, due soon, will address these.\r\n\r\nThe 4.00 release will utilise Angular-Distance Weighting (ADW) gridding, promising more accurate results with far greater adjustability and logging. It will cover the same spatial, temporal and variate spaces as version 3.23 (land areas excluding Antarctica at 0.5°x0.5°, monthly from 1901 to 2014 with no missing values, 10 variables).\r\n\r\nVersions 3.23 and 4.00 will run concurrently until 2016, after which the new (ADW) approach will be used. This is to allow comparisons between the methods and results to be made by users of the dataset.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe CRU TS 3.23 data are monthly gridded fields based on monthly observational data, which are calculated from daily or sub-daily data by National Meteorological Services and other external agents. The ASCII and netcdf data files both contain monthly mean values for the various parameters.\r\n\r\nAll CRU TS output files are actual values - NOT anomalies.\r\n\r\nCRU TS data are available for download to all CEDA users. The CEDA Web Processing Service (WPS) may be used to extract a subset of the data (please see link to WPS below)."

"abstract": "This dataset contains the adjusted climatological monthly mean files of air-sea fluxes (heat fluxes only) on a global grid in netCDF format produced at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC). \r\n\r\nIt was produced by the NERC COAPEC thematic programme project using inverse analysis techniques to remove the global ocean heat budget imbalance of 30 Wm-2 that was present in the NOC1.1 flux climatology.\r\n\r\nEach data file contains 12 climatological monthly means on a global 1 x 1 grid for a particular flux field:\r\n\r\nlatent heat flux (hfls), \r\nnet heat flux (hfns), \r\nsensible heat flux (hfss), \r\nnet longwave flux (rls), \r\nnet shortwave flux (rss).\r\n\r\nUnits are W/m2.\r\n\r\nThe flux fields were originally derived from the COADS1a (1980-93) dataset enhanced with additional metadata from the WMO47 list of ships. A full description of the fields is given in The Southampton Oceanography Centre (SOC) Ocean - Atmosphere, Heat, Momentum and Freshwater Flux Atlas (see link under Docs) and a parallel journal paper (Josey et al, 1999) describes the results of various evaluation studies (see links under Docs).\r\n\r\nIt is important to note that the quality of the fields has a strong spatial dependence which reflects the global distribution of ship observations. Quality is likely to be high in the well sampled North Atlantic & North Pacific but to decrease in the Southern Hemisphere. In particular, south of 40 S the errors in the fields are likely to be large and we recognise the existence of spurious features which have been generated during the objective analysis of the original raw fields. NOC stress that caution must be taken when interpreting the fields in this region.\r\n"

Input for the period 1973 to 2006 are ICOADS Release 2.4 ship data, the update from 2007 to 2014 uses ICOADS Release 2.5 and data after 2007 are preliminary. The dataset is presented as a time series of monthly mean values on a 1 degree area grid. \r\nThe quality of the gridded data is quantified by estimates of random, bias and total uncertainty. The monthly means were derived from daily estimates of each variable and the standard deviation of these daily values is also available. Please see nocs2_variable_defs document for detailed variable information. Users are advised to take account of the uncertainty estimates provided, and to note that in very poorly sampled regions, such as the Southern Ocean, the uncertainty estimates themselves may be unreliable.\r\n\r\nSurface meteorological fields have been adjusted to account for varying measurement heights and for known biases (Berry and Kent 2009, Berry and Kent 2011). Surface fluxes have been calculated from daily fields of the surface meteorological parameters using bulk parameterisations (Reed 1977; Clark et al. 1974; Smith 1980; 1988).\r\n\r\nThe NOCS v2.0 flux dataset was funded by the Oceans2025 project.\r\n\r\n"

"title": "Polar Pathfinder Sampler (PPSM): AVHRR Polar Pathfinder 5 km (1978-1996)",
"abstract": "The AVHRR Polar Pathfinder 5 km data set provides a time-series overview of each pole. It contains a high level of detail, yet still shows the entirety of each polar region. For the first time, daily composites of AVHRR-collected variables are compiled at a resolution suitable for process studies on a hemispheric scale.\r\n\r\nTemporal coverage begins in July 1981 and continues through the present, thereby extending the temporal coverage of upcoming MODIS and and other AM-1 products. Calibrated channel data, surface broadband albedo, surface (skin) temperature, and ancillary data, including solar zenith angles, relative azimuth angles, satellite elevation angles, time of pixel, cloud mask, orbit masks, and surface-type masks, are provided. These ancillary data allow users to apply algorithms of their choice to calculate albedo and surface temperature. Additionally, albedo and surface (skin) temperature have been compiled along with the other data sets noted above into composites at two selected local times for each day. These products are mapped to the EASE-Grid. Also included are ice motion products which include displacement vectors that provide an historical record of ice motion prior to the availability of ERS-1, ERS-2, and RADARSAT-derived ice products, and offer greater spatial coverage than is currently available from buoys or radar data for the Arctic and Antarctic.\r\n\r\nThe 5 km resolution AVHRR sample data on this CD-ROM covers both poles and comprises the same products as does the full data set, with the exception of ice motion. The CD-ROM contains data for September 8, 1997. Additionally, five movies for various periods in 1988 and 1989 illustrate some of the characteristics of the 5 km data when viewed as time series. One movie illustrates a novel \"background\" clear-sky skin temperature application. Five km AVHRR Polar Pathfinder products were averaged into 25 km grid cells, providing browse products for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The 25 km browse products also provide means of analyzing conditions and trends at a more manageable data volume.\r\n\r\nPlease note that only portions of the complete time series are available for distribution at the time of release of this CD-ROM."

The product has been produced using data acquired from the SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY (SCIAMACHY) on board the European Space Agency's environmental research satellite ENVISAT. \r\n\r\nThis product has been produced with the Bremen Optimal Estimation DOAS (BESD) algorithm, a full physics algorithm which uses measurements in the O2-A absorption band to retrieve scattering information of clouds and aerosols. This is the GHG CCI baseline algorithm for deriving SCIAMACHY XCO2 data: A product has also been generated from the SCIAMACHY data using an alternative algorithm: the WFMD algorithm, the link to this product's record page being provided in the documentation section. It is advised that users who aren't sure whether to use the baseline or alternative product use this product generated with the BESD baseline algorithm. For more information regarding the differences between baseline and alternative algorithms please see the GHG-CCI data products webpage in the documentation section. \r\n\r\nFor further information on the product, including details of the BESD algorithm and the SCIAMACHY instrument, please see the associated product user guide (PUG) or the Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents in the documentation section."

Production of the RGI was motivated by the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR5). Future updates will be made to the RGI and the GLIMS Glacier Database in parallel during a transition period. As all these data are incorporated into the GLIMS Glacier Database and as download tools are developed to obtain GLIMS data in the RGI data format, the RGI will evolve into a downloadable subset of GLIMS, offering complete one-time coverage, version control, and a standard set of attributes.\r\n\r\nThe product provided here is a converted raster version of the Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI 5.0) data, provided by the ESA Climate Change Initiative (CCI) Glaciers project. The CCI Glaciers project is one of a number of contributors to the RGI 5.0 dataset. For more details, and for a complete list of contributors, please see the RGI 5.0 Technical Report in the Documentation section below.\r\n\r\nThe following reference is recommended when citing RGI version 5.0:\r\nArendt, A., A. Information on uncertainties is also provided.\r\n\r\nThis data product is on a sinusoidal equal-area grid projection, matching the NASA standard level 3 binned projection. The default number of latitude rows is 4320, which results in a vertical bin cell size of approximately 4 km. The number of longitude columns varies according to the latitude, which permits the equal area property. Unlike the NASA format, where the bin cells that do not contain any data are omitted, the CCI format retains all cells and simply marks empty cells with a NetCDF fill value. "abstract": "A sonic anemometer and a gas analyser measuring water vapour and carbon dioxide are co-located within a compound dedicated to measuring fluxes using the eddy covariance method at Chilbolton Observatory. The eddy covariance technique is an atmospheric measurement method used to calculate vertical turbulent fluxes within the atmospheric boundary layer. This is the lowest region of the troposphere and is usually well mixed, particularly during daylight hours, due to convective heating from the sun. It is this motion in the lower troposphere that makes the technique possible.\r\n\r\nIn order to properly measure the turbulent properties of the atmosphere the measurements must be made at a high frequency - 20 Hz for the Chilbolton Observatory system. \r\n\r\nA sonic anemometer measures the 3 orthogonal components of the wind velocity by measuring the changes in the time of flight of sonic pulses between 3 transmitter/receiver pairs as a result of the air velocity. \r\n\r\nA gas analyser measures the absorptance of radiation along a fixed path and uses this to determine the concentration of a gas in air. For each gas the absorptance at 2 wavelengths is measured 152 times per second, one affected by that gas and the other unaffected.\r\n\r\nThere are more accurate instruments available for measuring water vapour and carbon dioxide (e.g. a relative humidity sensor for water vapour) but the benefit of the gas analyser is that it has a sufficiently fast response to resolve the rapid changes in concentration as a result of turbulence."

It measures both downwelling and upwelling radiation in 2 wavelength bands which are common to many similar instruments. A shorter wavelength band measures radiation received from the sun. It encompasses the visible spectrum, together with near infrared and longer wavelength ultraviolet, over a wavelength range of approximately 0.29 - 2.8 µm. It shows a clear response to the day/night cycle. Clouds and other aerosols reduce the detected radiation. A longer wavelength band measures longer wavelength infrared radiation (approximately 4.5 - 32 µm) produced by emission from the atmosphere and earth's surface. It does not respond significantly to the day/night cycle but changes according to the time of year and degree of cloud cover. "

Each grid point is a 3 GERB scan average weighted by the instrument point spread function.\r\n\r\nThe Geostationary Earth Radiation Budget (GERB) instrument makes accurate broadband measurements of earth leaving radiances from the geostationary METOSAT Second Generation satellites from which the emitted thermal and reflected solar components of the Earth Radiation Budget are derived. These data are available at high time resolution for the portion of the globe observable from a METEOSAT geostationary orbit above 0, 0. These data are ideal for studying fast variation in the radiation budget such as those associated with changing cloud conditions, aerosol events and the diurnal cycle. GERB 2 (METEOSAT-8) record covers the period March 2004 to April 2007. GERB 1 (METEOSAT-9) record covers the period May 2007 to January 2013. \r\n\r\nUsers must read the quality summary associated with these data and will find details of user applied correction that are recommended to be applied to these datasets before using. Soc., Vol. 86, 945-960, doi: 10.1175/BAMS-86-7-945.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe level 2 ARG (Averaged, Rectified, Geolocated) top of atmosphere radiance and flux products are averaged over three interleaved SW and TOT GERB scans. They are provided interpolated to a fixed rectified equal viewing angle grid and averaged resulting in a product with a temporal resolution of around 17 minutes. Times contained in the level 2 ARG product names indicate the nominal start of the integration period. North-south and east-west grid spacing is around 0.07° in viewing angle giving a spatial resolution of approximately 45 km at nadir. Whilst the radiances and fluxes are corrected for the spectral imperfections of the instrument, no correction is made for spatial non-uniformities in the instrument field of view response. Thus each ARG grid point is a weighted average of the observed scenes with the weighting determined by the instrument field of view response or Point Spread Function (PSF).\r\n"

During the ICARTT campaign the TOMCAT global CTM is being run in near-real time (about 19 hours behind present) driven by wind analyses from the ECMWF. The back trajectories are sufficiently long that a TOMCAT chemical analysis exists even at the origin of forecast trajectories. For example, the longest forecast lead time for the Azores domain is 5 days but the back trajectories are 7 days long so that the TOMCAT fields dating from 2 days before the latest meteorological analysis are used to find the attributes. For the US East Coast domain the back trajectories are shorter (3 days long) but the longest lead time is also 3 days so that the chemical attributes can be calculated as soon as TOMCAT has been brought up to date with the latest ECMWF analyses."
