All radiosondes were launched from the airstrip of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, northern India, from the location 26.519N, 80.233E, 126m above sea level. Launches took place between 5th July and 28th July at 00, 06, 12, 18UTC. The Vaisala RS41-SG radiosondes were fitted to Totex TA350 balloons. \r\n\r\nThe data were collected as part of the INCOMPASS field campaign May-July 2016, funded by Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) (NE/L01386X/1). The aim of the project was to improve the skill of rainfall prediction in operational weather and climate models by way of better understanding and representation of interactions between the land surface, boundary layer, convection, the large-scale environment and monsoon variability on a range of scales."

"abstract": "Climatology data used in Climate Change 2007, the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) calculated from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 3 (CMIP3) model output.\r\n\r\nSimulations of global climate models were run by various climate modelling groups coordinated by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) on behalf of the IPCC.\r\n\r\nClimatology data was calculated from global climate model simulations of experiments representative of Special Report on Emission Scenarios (SRES) scenarios: A1b, A2, B1, the commitment scenario experiment (COMMIT), the twentieth century experiment (20C3M), the pre-industrial control (PICTL) and the idealised experiments 1PCTO2X and 1PCTO4X.\r\n\r\nThe AR4 climatologies are 20-year period averages. 30-year period averages have also been calculated for comparison with the IPCC Third Assessment Report (TAR). The monthly climatology data covers the period from 1850-2100. The climatologies are of global scope and are provided on latitude-longitude grids.\r\n\r\nThe period averages are:\r\n20x: 20-year averages [+20-39, +46-65, +80-99, +180-199] as used in chapter 10 of IPCC 2007, \r\n30a: 30-year averages [+01-30, +31-60, +61-90] as used in the observed climatologies, \r\n30b: 30-year averages [+10-39, +40-69, +70-99] for compatibility with the IPCC 3rd Assessment Report (TAR).\r\n\r\nThe climatology period averages listed above are relative to AD2000 for SRES scenarios A1B, A2, B1, and the commitment scenario COMMIT, relative to AD1900 for the twentieth century run (20C3M) and relative to the start of the experiment for the pre-industrial control (PICTL) and the 1PCTO2X and 1PCTO4X runs. \r\n\r\nData files are 'tar' files with names of the form [model]_[experiment]_[variable]_{climatology}.tar. \r\n\r\nThe experiments in this dataset include the SRES future scenarios: \r\nA1B Globalisation with rapid economic growth, \r\nA2 Regionalisation with regionally oriented economic development, \r\nB1 Globalisation with global environmental sustainability.\r\nAlso:\r\nCOMMIT simulation of climate change we are committed to given the current loading of greenhouse gasses and zero future emissions. \r\nPICTL the pre-industrial control. \r\n20C3M the 20th century climate simulaiton. \r\n1PTO2X and 1PTO4X idealised simulaitons where the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is increased by 1 percent per year from pre-industrial concentration until reaching 2x and 4x the original concentration.\r\n\r\nThe dataset is comprised of monthly mean surface data for the following atmospheric variables: \r\nspecific humidity, \r\nprecipitation flux, \r\nair pressure at sea level, \r\nsurface downwelling shortwave flux in air, \r\nair temperature, \r\nair temperature daily max, \r\nair temperature daily min, \r\neastward wind, \r\nnorthward wind."

"abstract": "The AAST L3S Combined Surface Temperature (CST) products here primarily provide data on surface temperatures in the Arctic, across all Arctic surfaces, and their associated uncertainties. This dataset consists of CSTs with uncertainty estimates produced from the ATSR-2 and AATSR instruments on ESA's ERS-2 and Enivsat satellite respectively. The CSTs in this dataset are surface temperatures across ocean, snow/ice and land surfaces in the Arctic region, where the Arctic is defined as the area at, or north of, 60°N. Please note, the data here provide daily temperature data, not daily mean data as indicated by the dataset title. For more information see the paper linked under the details tab The data were produced for ATSR Satellite Dataset project, which was funded by The UK Dept. for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.\r\n\r\nIce (and snow) Surface Temperatures (ISTs) and Land Surface Temperatures (LSTs) used to produce this dataset are sourced from the GlobTemperature Level 2 LST V2.1 product. Sea Surface Temperature (SSTs) are from the ATSR SST L2P V3.0 product. This version of the CST dataset is v2.1, with an earlier version previously provided via the GlobTemperature data portal. ATSR data was sourced from the GlobTemperature data portal and the CEDA archive. It consists of a complete set of CST and accompanying auxiliary (AUX) datafiles for the ATSR-2 and AATSR instruments separately. ATSR-2 data are available for 01/08/1995 - 22/06/2003 while AATSR data are available for 20/05/2002 – 08/04/2012."

The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was run for two months, July 2013 and January 2014, to investigate the momentum budget components of the winds in the Dudh Koshi Valley. All the permanent snow and ice in the model has been changed to rock. This data was collected as part of the Dynamical drivers of the local wind regime in a Himalayan valley project (NE/L002507/1).\r\n\r\nThe WRF model has been modified to output the momentum budget components. There are four nested domains, of 27 km, 9 km, 3 km and 1 km resolution. The inner 1 km is 130 km by 130 km, centred on 27.98N, 86.76E."

"abstract": "This dataset is comprised of raw data from the NERC-funded, full waveform terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) deployed at sites on three continents, multiple countries and plot locations which, have been re-surveyed at different times. This plot site was situated in French Guiana, Cayenne, Nourague Nautre Reserve. The plot site had the following geographical features; Moisture type: Moist, Elevation: Lowland, Edaphic Type: Terra Firma, Substrate:Mixed, Geology: Pre-Quaternary,Forrestry: Old-growth.\r\n\r\nThe project scanned all trees in the permanent sample plot (PSP) spanning a range of soil fertility and productivity gradients (24 x 1 ha PSPs in total). The aim of the weighing trees with lasers project is to test if current allometric relationships are invariant across continents, or whether they differ significantly, and require continental level models; quantify the impact of assumptions of tree shape and wood density on tropical forest allometry; test hypotheses relating to pan-tropical differences in observed AGB (Above Ground Biomass) from satellite and field data. It also aims to apply new knowledge to assessing retrieval accuracy of forthcoming ESA BIOMASS and NASA GEDI (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation Lidar) missions and providing calibration datasets; In addition to testing the capability of low-cost instruments to augment TLS data including: UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicle) for mapping cover and canopy height; low-cost lidar instruments to assess biomass rapidly, at lower accuracy."

These MODIS Fire_cci v5.1 pixel products are distributed as 6 continental tiles and are based upon data from the MODIS instrument onboard the TERRA satellite at 250m resolution for the period 2001-2020. This product supersedes the previously available MODIS v5.0 product. The v5.1 dataset was initially published for 2001-2017, and has later been periodically extended to include 2018 to 2022.\r\n\r\nThe Fire_cci v5.1 Pixel product described here includes maps at 0.00224573-degrees (approx. 250m) resolution. Burned area(BA) information includes 3 individual files, packed in a compressed tar.gz file: date of BA detection (labelled JD), the confidence level (CL, a probability value estimating the confidence that a pixel is actually burned), and the land cover (LC) information as defined in the Land_Cover_cci v2.0.7 product.\r\n\r\nFiles are in GeoTIFF format using a geographic coordinate system based on the World Geodetic System (WGS84) reference ellipsoid and using Plate Carrée projection with geographical coordinates of equal pixel size. For further information on the product and its format see the Fire_cci Product User Guide in the linked documentation."

The network is one of a series of hydromet networks in urban centres in sub-Saharan Africa that were installed under the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) programme, Future Climate for Africa (FCFA). \r\n\r\nThis data set consists of fifteen minute data from two automatic weather stations (AWS) and three rain gauges located within a 20 km2 area of Kampala, Uganda, measured over the period 17 Nov 2017 to 30 Jun 2019. \r\n\r\nThe parameters measured at the Automatic Weather Stations (AWSs) are: barometric pressure (hPa); global radiation (W/m2); precipitation (mm); relative humidity (%RH); temperature (°C); wind direction (°); wind speed (km/h); maximum wind speed (km/h).\r\n\r\nThe purpose of the network is to provide data to aid the modelling of flooding in Kampala and also to provide additional baseline meteorological monitoring in Kampala.\r\nThe datasets are complete for the full period of monitoring apart from the following:\r\n- Lugoba Reservoir, 19:30 2 May 2018 to 07:45 3 May 2018\r\n- Freka Enterprises, Tula Road, 19:15 2 May 2018 to 08:15 3 May 2018\r\n\r\nThe contract for the installation of the Kampala stations was carried out by OTT Hydromet. They were installed with the assistance of the Uganda National Meteorological Authority, the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment and the Ugandan National Water and Sewerage Company."

The data set provides surface elevation changes (SEC) for the Greenland Ice sheet derived from SARAL-AltiKa for 2013-2017.\r\n \r\nThis new experimental product of surface elevation change is based on data from the AltiKa-instrument onboard the France (CNES)/Indian (ISRO) SARAL satellite. The AktiKa altimeter utilizes Ka-band radar signals, which have less penetration in the upper snow. However, the surface slope and roughness has an imprint in the derived signal and the new product is only available for the flatter central parts of the Greenland ice sheet.\r\n\r\nThe corresponding SEC grid from Cryosat-2 is included for comparison. The algorithm used to devive the product is described in the paper “Implications of changing scattering properties on the Greenland ice sheet volume change from Cryosat-2 altimetry” by S.B. Simonsen and L.S. Sørensen, Remote Sensing of the Environment, 190,pp.207-216, doi:10.1016/j.rse.2016.12.012. The approach used here corresponds to Least Squares Method (LSM) 5 described in the paper, in which the slope within each grid cell is accounted for by subtraction of the GIMP DEM; the data are corrected for both backscatter and leading edge width; and the LSM is solved at 1 km grid resolution (2 km search radius) and averaged in the post-processing to 5 km grid resolution and with a correlation length of 20 km."

"abstract": "This dataset contains grounding lines for 5 North Greenland glaciers, derived from generated from ERS -1/-2 and Sentinel-1 SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) interferometry. This version of the dataset (v1.3) has been extended with grounding lines for 2017. Data was produced as part of the ESA Greenland Ice Sheets Climate Change Initiative (CCI) project by ENVEO, Austria. \r\n\r\nThe grounding line is the separation point between the floating and grounded parts of the glacier. Processes at the grounding lines of floating marine termini of glaciers and ice streams are important for understanding the response of the ice masses to changing boundary conditions and for establishing realistic scenarios for the response to climate change. The grounding line location product is derived from InSAR data by mapping the tidal flexure and is generated for a selection of the few glaciers in Greenland, which have a floating tongue. In general, the true location of the grounding line is unknown, and therefore validation is difficult for this product.\r\n\r\nRemote sensing observations do not provide direct measurement on the transition from floating to grounding ice (the grounding line). The satellite data deliver observations on ice surface features (e.g. tidal deformation by InSAR, spatial changes in texture and shading in optical images) that are indirect indicators for estimating the position of the grounding line. Due to the plasticity of ice these indicators spread out over a zone upstream and downstream of the grounding line, the tidal flexure zone (also called grounding zone)."

The data consists of two products: a mass change time series for the entire Greenland Ice Sheet and different drainage basins for the period April 2002 to August 2016; and mass trend grids for different 5-year periods between 2003 and 2016. This version (1.2) is derived from GRACE monthly solutions provided by TU Graz (ITSG-Grace 2016)\r\n\r\nThe mass change time series contains the mass change (with respect to a chosen reference month) for all of the Greenland Ice Sheet and each individual drainage basin. For each month (defined by a decimal year) a mass change in Gt and its associated error (also in Gt) is provided. The mass trend grid product is given in units of mm water equivalent per year.\r\n\r\nMass balance is an important variable to understand glacial thinning and ablation rates to enable mapping glacier area change. The time series allows the longer term comparison of trends whereas the mass trend grids provide a yearly snapshot which can be further analysed and compared across the data set. \r\n\r\nBasin definitions and further data descriptions can be found in the Algorithm Theoretical Baseline Document (ST-DTU-ESA-GISCCI-ATBD-001_v3.1.pdf) and Product Specification Document (ST-DTU-ESA-GISCCI-PSD_v2.2.pdf) which are provided on the Greenland Ice Sheet CCI project website. "abstract": "This dataset provides an ice velocity map for the whole Greenland ice-sheet for the winter of 2017-2018, derived from Sentinel-1 SAR data acquired from 28/12/2017 to 28/02/2018, as part of the ESA Greenland Ice Sheet Climate Change Initiative (CCI) project. \r\n\r\nIn total approximately 1900 S-1A & S-1B scenes are used to derive the surface velocity applying feature tracking techniques. The ice velocity map is provided at 500m grid spacing in North Polar Stereographic projection (EPSG: 3413). The horizontal velocity is provided in true meters per day, towards EASTING(vx) and NORTHING(vy) direction of the grid, and the vertical displacement (vz),\r\nderived from a digital elevation model, is also provided. The product was generated by ENVEO (Earth Observation Information Technology GmbH)."

It is based on data from the ASAR instrument on ENVISAT, acquired between 10/11/2002 and 23/09/2010 and contains 47 maps of ice velocity. \r\n\r\nThe second time series 'greenland_jakobshavn_timeseries_1992_2010' contains the latest version of the time serives based on ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat data acquired between 27/01/1992 and 13/06/2010 and contains 120 maps.\r\n\r\nThe data is provided on a polar stereographic grid (EPSG3413: Latitude of true scale 70N, Reference Longitude 45E) with 500m grid spacing. The image pairs have a repeat cycle between 1 and 35 days.\r\nThe horizontal velocity is provided in true meters per day, towards EASTING(x) and NORTHING(y) direction of the grid, and the vertical displacement (z), derived from a digital elevation model, is also provided.\r\n\r\nThe product was generated by GEUS (Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland) and ENVEO (Earth Observation Information Technology GmbH)."

It provides components of the ice velocity and the magnitude of the velocity.\r\n\r\nThe data are provided on a polar stereographic grid (EPSG3413: Latitude of true scale 70N, Reference Longitude 45E). The horizontal velocity is provided in true meters per day, towards the EASTING(x) and NOTHING(y) directions of the grid, and the vertical displacement (z), derived from a digital elevation model, is also provided. Please note that the previous versions of this product provided the horizontal velocities as true East and North velocities.\r\n\r\nBoth a single NetCDF file (including all measurements and annotation), and separate geotiff files with the velocity components are provided. The product was generated by GEUS. For further information please see the Product User Guide (v2.0).\r\n\r\nPlease note - this product was released on the Greenland Ice Sheets download page in June 2016, but an earlier product (also accidentally labelled v1.1) was available through the CCI Open Data Portal and the CEDA archive until 29th November 2016. Please now use the later v1.1 product."

"title": "Arctic Cloud Summer Expedition (ACSE): wave statistics, wave spectra and raw buoy displacement data from the University of Leeds Datawell DWR-G4-Waverider buoy deployed from the Icebreaker Oden",
"abstract": "This dataset contains derived wave statistics, directional wave spectra and raw buoy displacement data from the University of Leeds Datawell DWR-G4-Waverider buoy deployed from the Swedish Icebreaker Oden durning Arctic Cloud Summer Expedition (ACSE). ACSE took place in the Arctic during summer 2014. These measurements were used to complement a suite of other observations taken during the cruise. Those of the UK contribution, as well as selected other data, are available within the associated data collection in the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis (CEDA) archives. Other cruise data may be available in the NOAA ACSE and The Bolin Centre for Climate Research SWERUS (SWEdish-Russian-US) holdings - see online resources linked to this record.\r\n\r\nThe buoy was deployed on numerous occasions during the voyage, including multiple deployments per day (the deployment number during the day is given in the filename following the date of deployment). However, some deployments are omitted from the archive where significant problems with the raw data were found (failure to obtain GPS lock; too-short a deployment, etc.). The deployment number for the day has been maintained to coincide with the buoy's deployment logs. Data are truncated to remove the deployment and recovery. No further quality control has been applied to the data.\r\n\r\nThe raw displacement timeseries data contains raw buoy displacements (up, north, west) from which the spectra were calculated. The spectra were calculated as 10-minute averages. The methodology used is detailed within the files, but include both raw (quite noisy) and smoothed spectra.\r\n\r\nThe overall wave statistics file contains all wave statistics data obtained during the voyage (significant wave height, spectral peak details, etc, along with the spectral moments from which the stats are calculated). These are all given for each spectrum as a whole, and partitioned into windsea and swell components. References to the techniques used to produce these statistics are given in the file.\r\n\r\nThe Arctic Cloud Summer Expedition (ACSE) was a collaboration between the University of Leeds, the University of Stockholm, and NOAA-CIRES. ACSE aimed to study the response of Arctic boundary layer cloud to changes in surface conditions in the Arctic Ocean as a working package of the larger Swedish-Russian-US Investigation of Climate, Cryosphere and Carbon interaction (SWERUS-C3) Expedition in Summer 2014. This expedition was a core component to the overall SWERUS-C3 programme and was supported by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat.\r\n\r\nACSE took place during a 3-month cruise of the Swedish Icebreaker Oden from Tromso, Norway to Barrow, Alaska and back over the summer of 2014. During this cruise ACSE scientists measured surface turbulent exchange, boundary layer structure, and cloud properties. Many of the measurements used remote sensing approaches - radar, lidar, and microwave radiometers - to retrieve vertical profiles of the dynamic and microphysical properties of the lower atmosphere and cloud.\r\n\r\nThe UK participation of ACSE was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC, grant: NE/K011820/1) and involved instrumentation from the Atmospheric Measurement Facility of the UK's National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS AMF). This dataset collection contains data mainy from the UK contribution with some additional data from other institutes also archived to complement the suite of meteorological measurements."
