Since the number of orbits per day is not an integer the sub orbital tracks do not repeat on a daily basis, although the local solar time of each satellite's passage is essentially unchanged for any latitude. The POES system includes the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and the Tiros Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS).\r\n\r\nBecause of the polar orbiting nature of the POES series satellites, these satellites are able to collect global data on a daily basis for a variety of land, ocean, and atmospheric applications. Data from the POES series supports a broad range of environmental monitoring applications including weather analysis and forecasting, climate research and prediction, global sea surface temperature measurements, atmospheric soundings of temperature and humidity, ocean dynamics research, volcanic eruption monitoring, forest fire detection, global vegetation analysis, search and rescue, and many other applications.",

With a maximum performance altitude of 70,000 feet and a nominal performance altitude of 65,000 feet, the NASA ER-2 travels outside 95 percent of the Earth's atmosphere at approximately 410 knots with a range of 3,000 nautical miles.\r\n\r\nThe NASA ER-2 aircraft are operated by the High Altitude Missions Branch at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.\r\n\r\nAs part of NASA's Airborne Science and Applications Program, the NASA ER-2 aircraft are used to acquire data for Earth science research (e.g., agriculture, forestry, hydrology, geology, photogrammetry, oceanography, meteorology).                 "abstract": "ITOS (Improved TIROS Operational System) was the follow-on to the TIROS series. They were the second generation of operational polar orbiters. Once operational, the satellite's designator was change to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmopheric Administration Satellite). The primary objective of the ITOS Series of Sun-synchronous meteorological satellites was to provide improved operational infrared and visual observations of Earth cloud cover for use in weather analysis and forecasting. Secondary objectives included measuring snow and ice and the sea surface, and gathering information on the vertical structure of temperature and moisture in the atmosphere on a regular daily basis. Additional instruments, starting with ITOS-D/NOAA -2, also provided both global daytime and nighttime daily direct readout real-time cloudcover data."

The DC-8 can carry 30,000 pounds of scientific instruments and equipment.\r\n\r\nAmong the aircraft's features are wing pylons (for aerosol sampling), a gyro-stabilized pointing and tracking mirror system, a dropsonde delivery tube, atmospheric chemistry sampling probes, and several reinforced ports that accept experiments pointing in virtually any direction. Experiment support facilities include weather radar, an integrated navigation management system, a satellite-based time code generator, a stand-alone Global Positioning System, and a weather satellite receiver system. Each experiment is supported by an information collection and transmission system providing navigation, aircraft conditions, and environmental data measured by facility sensors."

                "abstract": "The British Antarctic Survey has a Twin Otter aircraft with a certified fit of airborne atmospheric instrumentation suitable for atmospheric, boundary layer and cloud/aerosol studies.\r\n\r\nThe Twin Otter aircraft is a very adaptable platform used the world over as a ‘bush’ aircraft. Its twin turbo-prop engines and ‘Short Take off and Landing’ (STOL) capability allow it to be used from small, remote unpaved airfields and the addition of skis or tundra tyres also allows operation on snow and from remote camps.\r\n\r\nThe aircraft can be operated single pilot and a long range fuel tank is also available. Double cargo doors provide good access for installing instrument racks.\r\n\r\nIn general the aircraft works in the Antarctic from October through to March each year depending on projects, and can operate at other latitudes outside this period, for example ACCACIA in the Arctic February 2013.\r\n\r\nThe instrument suite includes standard temperature and water vapour sensors as well as a turbulence probe allowing full atmospheric profile measurements of temperature, dew point and winds.\r\n\r\nThe fast turbulence probe also facilitates sensible heat flux measurements by the eddy covariance method. These boundary layer measurement capabilities are complemented by incoming and outgoing radiation instruments and a downward looking infra-red thermometer.\r\n\r\nThe floor hatch opening can also accommodate a fixed laser range finder or scanning laser which has been used for measuring ice floe topography. The required GPS and attitude measurements to support this are available. Video and digital SLR cameras can also be fitted here. The camera bay can also be configured to drop airborne deployable buoys.\r\n\r\nHard points and pylons are available on each wing. A DMT Cloud and aerosol spectrometer (CAPS) probe is used for cloud studies. Other standard PMS pod instruments can easily be accommodated. A closed path Licor H2O/CO2 instrument, Grimm optical particle counter and cloud condensation nuclei counter are fed from simple Rosemount inlets.\r\n\r\nRange:\t1000km including skis. Increased with long range tank depending on configuration.\r\nAirspeed:\tCruise 65m/s. Data collection 60m/s.\r\nComplement:\tPilot + maximum 4 mission operators / scientists.\r\nAltitudes:\tless than 35m to 5000m. Unpressurized but with oxygen fit for pilots and operators."
